The field experience was a great opportunity to help us to become involved in our community. It allowed us to participate in numerous events in our community, including the after school program at the Northwest YMCA, tailgates, and Best Buddies.
After attending the field experience opportunity at the Northwest YMCA a few times, I was more comfortable interacting with the students. I got the opportunity to help them with their homework, which gave me the opportunity to see the different ways that the students learn. It also gave me the opportunity to teach them different ways to learn, which helped them to figure out which way that they prefer to learn. I also got the opportunity to interact with the students by playing games. I felt most distanced from what was happening during the first few times that I attended the after school care at the Northwest YMCA, because I wasn’t sure what to do.
I learned that the after school care provides an efficient learning environment for the students. It allows them to not only interact with other students, but also allows them to have time to do their homework. I worked with both age groups at the field experience, which gave me the opportunity to see the how they interact with each other. I learned that they are interested in different items, which makes it challenging to find something that they all are interested in. I learned that I am a kinesthetic learner, which means that I prefer to learn by hands on experience.
If I had to participate in the field experience again, I think that I would interact more with the children, which would help to give me a better experience. I would try to get to know them better and figure out different ways that I could plan a game that they could participate in. It surprised me to see how different all of the students were from each other. It allowed myself to experience the diversity in our community and different ways that I can help them to look past those differences and interact with each other.
