Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC Standard: Standard #3: Learning Environments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2019 as a part of my SPED 210- Collaborative Relationshipsin Special Educationclass, I had the opportunity to complete ten hours of field experience. As a class, we decided to complete six hours at the Hillcroft ABA Clinic and four hours at Inspire Academy. At the ABA Clinic, I was able to observe the therapists, while they worked one on one with the children. I was able to observe the children while they were in their rooms, musical therapy, gym, and interacting with other children. At Inspire Academy, I was able to observe numerous different classrooms. I was able to observe the learners as they engaged positive social interaction, learning, and self motivation.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the field experience hours, I learned the importance of providing a learning environment that supports individual and collaborative learning. I learned that it is important to encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation. I learned the importance of letting each learner express themselves through their work. I also learned the importance of understanding individual differences in order to create inclusive learning environments that meet each learner’s needs. Through this experience, I have learned how to use Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning to create a classroom that will support individual and collaborative learning. I have learned how to use his theory by getting to see the different ways that the students received rewards and punishments for their behavior. I will use his theory in the future by giving the students rewards and punishments for their behavior.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence on Standard 3- Learning Environments by participating in field experience hours in SPED 210- Collaborative Relationships in Special Educationand SPED 240- Culturally Appropriate Practice. Through the field experience hours, I was able to observe how the teachers work with each other to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning. I was also able to observe how the teachers encouraged positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation. I was also able to create environments in other classes where I was able to model what the therapists and teachers did. By ensuring that I will be able create a learning environment that supports individual and collaborative learning, I will be able to ensure that the learners will engage in positive social interaction, active learning, and self motivation.
