Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC Standard: Standard #7: Planning for Instruction

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2019 as a part of my EDUC 224- Introduction to Scientific Inquiry class, I had the opportunity to create and implement a flexible learning plan. In small groups, we had the opportunity to choose a science standard and a math standard, which allowed us to teach a cross disciplinary lesson. We chose the standards about making weather observations, cloud types, cloud cover, bar graphs, and picture graphs. We created a flexible learning plan that included objectives, assessment strategies, resources and materials, vocabulary, anticipating challenges, procedure, modifications for exceptional needs, and extension ideas. I had the opportunity to implement the lesson plan, which included teaching the lesson and participating in the activities that we had planned to ensure that each student meets their learning goals.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the process of creating and implementing the flexible learning plan, I learned about the importance of researching the Indiana Academic Standards, in order to ensure that I was covering all of the areas that needed to be covered. I learned how to create a flexible learning plan that included the objectives, assessment strategies, resources and materials, vocabulary, anticipating challenges, procedure, modifications for exceptional needs, and extension ideas. I also learned that it is important to include information in the procedure, including before the lesson, during the lesson, open ended questions, transitions, activity time, and closure. Through this experience, I have learned how to use Bloom’s Taxonomy to create a flexible learning plan that encourages the students to use higher forms of thinking by applying what they learned in the different activities, which will assure that each student meets their learning goals.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence on Standard 7- Planning for Instruction by creating and implementing a flexible learning plan. Through the flexible learning plan, I was able to plan instruction that supports every student by teaching them in different ways, which helped them to meet their learning goals. I was able to explain the vocabulary words by discussing them and having the students participate in a vocabulary activity. Through the lesson plan, I had the opportunity to use the knowledge of content areas, curriculum, and cross-disciplinary skills by teaching the lesson. By ensuring that my teaching relates to the Indiana Academic Standards, I will be able to use the knowledge of content areas, curriculum, and cross-disciplinary skills to help the learners to meet their learning goals.
