Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC Standard: Standard #6: Assessment

The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2019 as a part of my EDUC 230- The Exceptional Child class, I had the opportunity to participate in three case conferences. In small groups, we read the scenarios and chose different roles, such as the principal, teacher, co-teacher, special education teacher, and the counselor. During the first conference, we had the opportunity to complete it in front of the class. During the second and third conference, we had the opportunity to complete it in our small groups along with the parent. During the conferences, we were able to discuss the learner’s progress and create a set of goals that we wanted the learner to achieve by the next case conference. During the third conference, the learner was able to receive an IEP. We had the opportunity to fill out the IEP based on the student’s needs, which helped to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the case conferences, I learned about the importance of focusing on the learner that it is about. I learned the importance of asking for the parent’s opinion. I learned about how to collaborate with the learner’s parents in order to set goals that you want the learner to achieve throughout the year. I learned that it is important to monitor the student’s progress in order to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. I also learned that it is important to create an inclusive learning environment that meets every learner’s needs. Through this experience, I have learned how to use Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence to understand that not every student will learn in the same way and that it is important to use different methods of assessment in my classroom, which will help to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence on Standard 6- Assessment by participating in three different case conferences. Through the case conferences, I was able to understand and use different methods of assessment by understanding that the students learn in different ways and teaching them in different ways. I was able to learn how to fill out an IEP based on the student’s needs. Through the case conferences, I was able to engage learners in their own growth and monitor learner progress, which helped the students to achieve their goals. By ensuring that I will be able to use different methods of assessment, I can ensure that I will be able to monitor learner progress, which will help to guide my and learner’s decision making.
