Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC Standard: Standard #4: Content Knowledge

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2019 as a part of my EDUC 233- Literacy Development Through Children’s Literature class, I created and implemented a lesson plan. In small groups, we got to choose a children’s book and create a lesson plan based off of the book that we chose. I was able to research the Indiana Academic Standards based off of what grade level that we chose to teach. Once we selected The Cat in the Hat, we thoroughly read the book and created a lesson plan that included objectives, assessment strategies, resources and materials, vocabulary, anticipating challenges, procedure, modifications for exceptional needs, and extension ideas. I had the opportunity to implement the lesson plan, which included reading the book and participating in the activities that we had planned to ensure that the learners mastered the content.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the process of creating and implementing the lesson plan, I learned about the importance of researching the Indiana Academic Standards, in order to ensure that I was covering all of the areas that needed to be covered. I learned how to create a lesson plan that included the objectives, assessment strategies, resources and materials, vocabulary, anticipating challenges, procedure, modifications for exceptional needs, and extension ideas. I also learned that it is important to include information in the procedure, including before the story, during the story, open ended questions, transitions, activity time, and closure. Through this experience, I have learned how use Bloom’s Taxonomy to create a lesson plan that encourages the students to use a higher form of thinking, which will assure that the learners master the content.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence on Standard 4- Content Knowledge by creating and implementing a lesson plan. Through the lesson plan, I was able to create learning experiences that were meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Through the lesson plan, I had the opportunity to understand central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of discipline by focusing on the topic, asking questions, and helping the students to understand the lesson. By ensuring that my teaching relates to the Indiana Academic Standards, I can ensure that I will be able to create learning experiences that will help the learners to master the content.
